Whether you’re looking to do road trip around the Sunshine State, hire a car to visit a National Park, or simply drive from Miami to Orlando, you’ll need correct authorisation to do so.
What does this mean for UK visitors planning to drive in Florida?
As well as a Great Britain or Northern Ireland driving licence, you’re also strongly advised to take an International Driving Permit. If you’re hiring a car, the hire company could ask for a check code so they can see your driving record, too. In addition, if your driving license does not include a photo you’ll need to bring proof of identity which does.
International Driving Permit (IDP)
An IDP allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle and is valid for 12 months from the date of issue, providing the driver also holds a UK driving license. Although it’s not strictly obligatory to have an IDP when buying or hiring a vehicle in Florida, some car hire companies and insurance companies do insist you carry an IDP, so check the terms and conditions with the hire or insurance company you intend to use before you fly.
Which International Driving Permit do I need?
There are two types of International Driving Permit, the IDP 1926 and the IDP 1949. In the United States, you’ll need the IDP 1949.
How old do I need to be to obtain an International Driving Licence?
You must be over the age of 18 and hold a valid UK driving licence, or a test pass certificate and provisional driving license to apply for an IDP.
Is the International Driving Permit the same as an International Driving Licence?
No. The International Driving Licence is no longer a legally recognised document, and cannot be used instead of a UK driving licence to carry an International Driving Permit.
How can I obtain an International Driving Permit for my trip to the United States?
You can apply by post, or at selected UK Post Office branches. You cannot obtain an IDP once you’ve arrived in the United States.
